My chapters are coming up too short, averaging at 1100 each. I’m progressing with the main plot well but my characters are lacking depth and my chapters are missing subplots.
Wondering if I should go back now and plump them out before I get too far into the word count or get down the foundations and adjust the layers later??
Only on 6851 at the moment – I missed a day yesterday which makes a real difference. So my aim is reach 10,000 today but I’m just contemplating the best way to go about this.
I’m in pretty much the same position, but I tend to think if I go back and fill out the chapters now, I will get bogged down in editing.
Nothing wrong with short chapters =)
I’ve been adding characters/subplots/etc later, and I figure I can go back when I’m done and ‘seed’ them more appropriately. But we’ll see how that works out.
Thanks for the input guys. Despite this, I did go back and plump out my previous chapters because my characters were lacking so much I felt that the story didn’t have much effect or significance. It also bulked out my word count nicely!

My chapters usually span about ten MS Word pages, however, in the story I’m writing at the moment, they never go over four. I’d say they’re about 1000-2000 words a piece. Like fminuzzi said, nothing wrong with short chapters. How far are you now? (I realise you posted this almost a week ago!) Also, I’d suggest just writing the story as it comes to you and then go back and plump it out later. 🙂
(Thanks for following me!)
Im at 13850 =/ had a few off days but im going to settles down today and aim for 18000-20000! I think i will do that, get the main chapters down and fill in around them, developing and plumping. Thanks!
